Head of IT

Purpose

Take hands-on ownership of day-to-day IT operations and infrastructure in a Linux-heavy, on-premises environment. This role requires a broad and adaptable infrastructure generalist—not a specialist expected to be an expert in every area.

Core Responsibilities:

• Linux & Infrastructure: Operate and troubleshoot Linux-based infrastructure and internal services.
• Core Systems: Maintain physical servers, storage, networking, virtualisation, backups, and monitoring.
• Data Centre Operations: Perform practical data-centre work, including installation, cabling, hardware replacement, and fault-finding.
• User & Endpoint Support: Support employees and endpoints across Linux, Windows, and macOS.
• Identity & Access Management: Manage identity, access, onboarding, offboarding, and equipment lifecycle.
• Operations & Improvement: Handle incidents, vendors, documentation, and ongoing infrastructure improvements.
• Automation: Automate recurring work and reduce operational dependencies.
• Adaptability: Take ownership across different technical areas as priorities change.

Candidate Profile

• Experience: Senior, hands-on IT infrastructure generalist with strong Linux experience.
• Environment Expertise: Practical experience with on-premises infrastructure and data-centre environments.
• Technical Knowledge: Solid understanding of servers, storage, networking, virtualisation, and troubleshooting.
• Versatility: Comfortable supporting both core infrastructure and end users.
• Mindset: Dynamic, pragmatic, and capable of learning unfamiliar systems quickly.
• Work Style: Able to work independently, prioritise effectively, and take full responsibility from problem identification to resolution.
• Key Attribute: A broad technical understanding is more important than specialist expertise in every individual technology.

Interim Consultant Mandate:

• Maintain operational continuity.
• Resolve immediate technical issues.
• Identify key operational risks.
• Progress critical infrastructure work.
• Improve system documentation until a permanent replacement is in place.
